INTRODUCTION:
18 minutes

  • Practice adding three numbers mentally, eg, 9 + 7 + 3 and discuss methods used. Go to www.primarygames.co.uk and use ‘Balloon burst automatic’ on the whiteboard as a whole class or from the CD or network if you have this already.
  • Recap on what division means in terms of sharing and carry out a few simple division questions. Emphasise how the numbers are shared equally.
  • Explain the main task of the session to find average numbers in relation to the numbers of fish caught.

MAIN ACTIVITY: 35 minutes

  • Provide the class with the ‘2.3a Average fish catches’ worksheet and work through the worksheet together as a class to ensure all understand how to find the average.

  • Provide the pupils with the ‘2.3b Finding the average number of fish catches 1900 fishing season’ worksheet and the children answer the questions on the back of the sheet by dividing the ‘fish caught’ by the number of fishing sessions for each month of the season. The children will need calculators for this part probably, so a quick demonstration of using the calculator correctly may be required.

PLENARY: 10 minutes

  • Go through the answers for the ‘2.3b Finding the average fish catches 1900 fishing season’ worksheet and the children check their own work to ensure they have worked out the correct average score. Use ‘2.3c Answers to finding the average fish catches 1900 fishing season’ if required.

  • Choose 5 children to think of number less than 10 and write them on the board. The class then try to work out the average number per child and see who is the quickest. Explain how they worked out the average.


Suggested extension activities or cross curricular links:

  • If the school team have played a tournament or series of matches, work out their average score for the season so far.

  • Look at statistics for other forms of fishing on the internet (i.e. Angling Times) or the European Economic Community quota system.
