18 minutes

  • Introduce the lesson by explaining that they will be focusing on money and the cost of fishing equipment.

  • Begin by giving the pupils mental maths questions related to money for all four number operations. Use ‘2.2a Mental maths questions (Money)’ if required and ‘2.2b Answers to mental maths questions (Money)

  • Discuss the method of rounding to the nearest 10 then compensating (eg, £26.99 + £4.99 would be completed by working out £27.00 + £5.00 = £32.00 – £0.02 = £31.98). Practice with simple examples.

MAIN ACTIVITY: 35 minutes

  • Show the class the price list for the fishing equipment and explain that they will be using these prices to answer real life word problems.

  • Discuss what methods of working will be required, depending on the number operations involved.

  • Provide the class with ‘2.2c Fishing equipment word problems’ and the pupils work individually to answer the questions.

PLENARY: 10 minutes

  • Go through the answers and methods of working out each of the questions. Use ‘2.2d Answers to fishing equipment word problems’ if required.

  • Set the class the challenge to find out if they would prefer to be given 5p in January and have the amount doubled each month, being able to spend it 12 months later, or whether they would prefer to be given £60 in January and able to spend it straight away. Which earns the most money? (Doubled each month = £102.40)
