Lesson plan ideas, activities and resource sheets

INTRODUCTION:
15 minutes

  • Discuss the history of the Severn Estuary and what the class already know about the river and anything that has happened in the past. This could be anything from Roman use of the river to surfing.

  • Read some examples of events from the history of the Severn by using the information from ‘5.1a Creating your own class Severn timeline’ worksheet.

  • Explain that the class will be making a timeline of their own to display in the classroom.

MAIN ACTIVITY: 30 minutes

  • Provide the pupils with the ‘5.1a Creating your own class Severn timeline’ worksheet and split the dates up between the class. Not all of the dates need to be used, but each child can have a date to represent.

  • Provide the pupils with A4 paper and use in landscape. The top left corner (8cm x 4cm box maybe) can have the date in bubble writing inside and then the rest of the page can be used for the information and pictures to represent the events.

PLENARY: 15 minutes

  • Move around the class and allow pupils to show their A4 presentations of the specific date they have chosen. See if the rest of the class can identify why the date is important.

  • Display posters in chronological order around the classroom and use for future reference for history of the river.

Suggested extension activities or cross curricular links:

  • ICT – use the Internet to find out more information about dates or events.

  • Drama – ask the children to improvise events in the river’s history.
