Lesson plan ideas, activities and resource sheets

18 minutes

  • Write the sentence ‘The ship sailed down the river’ on the board and ask the class if there is anything wrong with the sentence? Answers will vary, but lead them to the fact that nothing is wrong, but it could be improved by adding further vocabulary.

  • Discuss types of words (nouns, adjectives, adverbs) and list examples. Discuss their use and why they are used.

  • Improve the beginning sentence by adding words and detail (it may become ‘The single-masted black Severn trow sailed gracefully down the river on the ebbing tide).

  • Write further sentences and do the same, making a ‘perfect sentence’ as a class.

MAIN ACTIVITY: 35 minutes

  • After discussing and practicing the perfect sentence, provide the class with ‘1.3a Severn adverbs’ and the pupils work individually to copy out the sentences neatly, but include appropriate adverbs in capital letters. Alternatively, allow pupils to simply add the adverbs to the sentence on the worksheet.

  • Once the class have completed the adverbs, challenge them to write their own ‘perfect sentences’ about the river.

PLENARY: 10 minutes

  • Move around the class and allow pupils to read aloud their sentences with the inserted adverbs and if pupils have written their own sentences, share these also.

  • Move around the class and ask pupils to call out an adverb. Try for all different examples and make a list.

Suggested extension activities or cross curricular links:

  • Create cartoon or story characters to help with using different words, eg Nick the noun or Adam the adjective and character sheets could be produced with information about the words and then examples of them in use with Severn sentences.
