INTRODUCTION:
20 minutes

  • Carry out shared reading of an alphabet poem and discuss and explain that they are going to write one about the River Severn. Use ‘1.2a An alphabet poem’ if required.

  • Look at word order and how the sentence can be rearranged to allow a different starting letter to be used.

  • Carry out shared writing of part of an alphabet poem for the River Severn for selected letters.

MAIN ACTIVITY: 30 minutes

  • Provide the class with the ‘1.2b Writing an alphabet poem about the River Severn’ worksheet and the class begin to write their own alphabet poem about the river in pairs or other chosen groups. They can complete the letters in any order with what they already know about the river.

  • Use the ‘1.2c A – Z of River Severn vocabulary’ information sheet for extra vocabulary if required. The pupils can also just use scenarios from the history of the river rather than use technical vocabulary at all times.

PLENARY: 10 minutes

  • Move around the class and allow pupils to read their poems aloud to the class.

  • The rest of the class listen and must spot the rhyming pattern used, if any.

Suggested extension activities or cross curricular links:

  • Use the poems in an intra school competition and make an exhibition of poetry or just display within own classrooms.

  • Record readings of the poems on to tape to create a poetry tape

  • Take the best lines from each poem to form a class alphabet poem
